Idiot Lights

Dryer Vent Cleaning Hartford CT:  Over 17,000 dryer fires happen each year and most are caused by lint accumulation in the dryer vent systemDryer vent cleaning is the best way to eliminate this fire hazard and improve dryer performance.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is recommending that all clothes dryers be equipped with indicator lights that alert the owner when maintenance is required.  If the “change oil” or “check engine” lights work on cars, then maybe they will work on dryers too.

Out of sight out of mind…This is the problem with dryer lint.  Most people know to clean the lint screen after every load; however, few are aware of just how much lint is escaping into the dryer cabinet and the dryer vent system.  When lint builds up and restricts air flow, all it takes is a spark from the dryer to ignite it and cause a rapidly spreading house fire.

The CPSC looked at reports from 137 dryer fires between 2006 and 2010, with dryers of various ages and damages ranging from a few sparks to complete devastation.

One common issue was the owner notice the dryer was not working as efficiently as it did when it was new.  This is a typical warning sign of lint accumulation blocking air flow, resulting in higher energy usage and fire hazard.  In one case, lint between the drum and dryer cabinet, near the burner, ignited.  The dryer duct was clear, but the there was 3-4 inches of charred lint in the bottom of the dryer cabinet.  Lint can also accumulate in the dryer’s blower housing.

The CPSC is investigating two types of indicator lights for clothes dryers.  One would be triggered after a certain number of laundry loads; the other would be an “abnormal operations” indicator linked to the thermostat.  Either way, the CPSC concludes that using the indicators may alert the owner that dryer vent cleaning service is needed.

The CPSC has studied many major brands of dryers with built-in sensors to detect reduced air flow.  So far, the results have been inconsistent.

Dryer vent cleaning remains the number one way to prevent dryer fires and improve dryer performance and efficiency.  Though these indicator lights, or add-ons like the LintAlert, are steps in the right direction, proper maintenance is the answer.
